Increase in Burn Bans Help KPX Tractors Sell A Record Number of Wood Chippers

For various reasons, local governments are increasingly banning outdoor burning of any kind. On January 17, 2008, officials in Cooke County Texas enacted a 90 day countywide burn ban. A day later, our company sold 3 wood chippers to frustrated residents of Cooke County, said Mr. Brosseau. The new ban eliminates all outdoor burning for the next 90 days in the unincorporated areas of the county, and if residents break the law, county officials say they will suffer the consequences. Officials say if residents are caught burning, they could face up to a $500 fine.

David Petersen, General Manager of KPX Tractors, expects the spike in chipper sales to continue. Burn bans are here to stay. In the past, most bans were temporary and related to dry weather seasons. Now we're seeing permanent legislative action at the state level, says Petersen. In Washington, state law requires that outdoor burning be phased out when reasonable alternatives to outdoor burning become available. The legislature there believes burning is a health and safety issue; fires can burn out of control and the carbon emissions are unhealthy. Wood chippers are a logical option when burning is disallowed. KPX Tractors' wood chippers are powered by the PTO (Power Take Off) shaft native to most agricultural tractors.
